description

You are in Boom Island Park on the east bank of the Mississippi River looking south towards downtown Minneapolis. The downtown skyline is visible in the background. In the foreground is the Jonathan Paddleford, owned by the Paddleford Packet Boat Company, which gives public excursions from the park.

This caption is not correct. In the foreground of this picture is the Betsy Northrup, which is a party barge that can be coupled together with the Anson Northrup, a mock-sidewheeler paddleboat. The tug to the right of the Betsy can also be used to propel her. All three vessels are owned and operated by the Paddleford Packet Boat Company, Port of St. Paul.

Mr. Stremski is still correct 5 years later.
This photograph is not of the Jonathon Paddleford. It's a converted barge coupled to a larger paddle-boat for larger groups (710 people). They are the Anson and Betsey Northrup--Anson the boat and Betsey the Barge. Photo is apparently taken from the Betsey Northrup.
My wife and I were married onboard the Jonathon Paddleford in 1995... we remember that pretty well. I heard a number of years ago that the boat was being decommissioned, but apparently that was averted since she's still in service. Cool.

    Corrections and omissions Dept.
    I misspelled "Padelford."
The photo was taken FROM the Anson Northrup OF the Betsey Northrup. The tug remains the tug--"Ugh the Tug."

I left Minneapolis in 1977, and always thought that the Mississippi was such a dirty river, now compared to what we have on the East Coast and here in California, I almost think you could drink out of it.
