description

You are looking west from the east corner of 14th St and 4th Avenue Southeast. The building on the opposite corner used to be Grey's Drug. It was being converted to the Loring Pasta Bar when this picture was taken.

The Varsity Theater pictured here was where I spent a quarter on Saturday afternoon matinees in the 1930s and 40s to watch serials such as Buck Rogers, etc. At that time I lived at 1078 16th Ave S.E. and attended Tuttle Grade school which still is on Tallmadge Ave. I later graduated from John Marshall High School in 1949.

In the mid-60's this was my downtown. I never lived more than a block or short bike ride away. One summer I worked at the submarine sandwich shop which was next to the building on the corner.I have many happy and sad moments of my time there and often wish the rest of my life had been filled with such memories. Dinkytown was a magical place long before I arrived and has remained so for thousands more after I said farewell. Whenever I go back to Minnesota a quick trip back to Al's Breakfast for a West Bank Omelet or bacon waffle is always a must! Over time the look and feel of the neighborhood has changed but so have the neighbors. In my day, Dinkytown spawned Best Buy and Mama D's, not long after Bob Dylan had left to become a legend.

Correction: The building on this corner was Gray's Drug at fourteenth Ave. and Fourth St.,across from Bridgeman's. The sub shop was on the opposite side of Fourth.
